Emergency Safety Interventions
The purpose of this article is to assure all staff, parents/guardians and extended families receive information about the Kansas regulations on the use of Emergency Safety Interventions (ESI), its prohibitions, and best practices that school districts are allowed to use when dealing with any student who is in immediate danger of harming self or others.
Kansas ESI Regulations Strictly Prohibit:
- Mechanical restraint-using any device intended to substantially limit a student’s movement.
- Chemical restraint-use of medication to control a student’s violent physical behavior or restrict a student’s freedom of movement (except as prescribed).
- Use of face-up or face-down restraints.
- Use of physical restraint that obstructs student’s airways or mode of communication.
