Eight Flinthills High School spent three days competing in the Technology Student Association (TSA) State Competition in Salina the last week of March. With 6 new members and 2 returning members we were overall a young team, but they worked hard preparing and were as ready as you can be to compete. When the competition was over and the winners announced I discovered it wasn't how they performed in the competition that made me proud. It was their grit. That these young people stepped up and competed in competitions they had never heard of, with no idea what to expect, was inspiring. They conducted themselves with maturity and respect, enough so that I received many compliments on my team from the judges and other advisors.
Philip Humig (FR), Caden Sangals (SO) and returning member Bryant Harris (SO) competed in Video Game Design where they created a video game using Unity software. While they didn't place this year I have no doubt the experience of this competition will help them tremendously in the future. Caden also competed in Technology Bowl alongside Alyssa Howard (SR) and Trey McNemee (SR). They took a quiz to determine seeding, and ended up falling to the #5 seed in the Tech Bowl tournament. Hunter Travnichek (SR) competed in Photographic Technology. She aced her interview and the judges loved her creative take on the given challenge, but she fell just short of placing.
Alyssa and Trey's main focus was Digital Video Production. Their video earned them a solid 4th place in the final standings, one place shy of qualifying for the national competition. Brandon Henson (SR) had a computer glitch which cost him an hour of work in CAD - Architecture, but despite the loss of time he still earned a 5th place title at the state level.
Brandon Henson and Hadley Girty (FR) created a tiny house for the Architectural Design competition. Mr.Worrell was a tremendous help to the boys, whose true-to-scale tiny house model made them the state champions! This qualified them to compete at the national competition.
All TSA members also competed in Technology Problem Solving and On-Demand Video. It was a busy 3 days but the experiences were worth every second!
At the Advisor’s Meeting I was appointed to be a member of the TSA State Advisor’s Committee, which is an unexpected honor!
